Your privacy, and how to use this site
We take your privacy seriously. There are no accounts and no tracking here, the only cookies are technical ones that keep the site running, and we never sell or share what you search for or where you are. Below is exactly how the site handles your searches and your location, and what it can and cannot tell you.
Private by design
The site was built to answer your question and nothing more. There are no accounts and no sign-in. Apart from a few technical cookies, described below, it stores nothing in your browser, and it runs no analytics, advertising or tracking scripts of any kind. Unless you choose to write to us, nothing you do here is tied to your identity or built into a profile, and nothing is ever sold, rented or shared for marketing.
Your location stays private
If you press Use my location, your browser asks your permission first, and you are free to say no. If you allow it, your position is rounded to within about 35 feet and used for one thing only: to produce your report. It is not stored in any database, not used for anything else, and never shared with or sold to anyone outside the team that runs this site.
So that you can come back to your report, its coordinates are kept in the report's web address. That address stays in your own browser history, and it goes no further unless you choose to copy or share the link, so share it only with people you would tell where you are.
Only what is needed to answer you
To give you an answer, the site sends just two things to our server:
- What you type into the search box, to suggest addresses and find the one you are looking for
- The coordinates of the address or location a report is for, to look up its fire hazard zone, power line fire risk and fire history
Both are used to answer that one request and are then discarded. Neither is stored in a database or attached to you, and neither is shared with anyone. Like every website, our server keeps routine access logs, which record requests along with the IP address that made them. We use them only to keep the site running and fix problems, never to identify or profile anyone.
When you write to us
If you send a message from the contact page, it carries your name, your email address and what you write. If you write from a report, it also carries that report's address, so that we can see what you are seeing. The message is sent to us by email and is not stored in a database on this site. We use it only to reply to you and to fix what you tell us about, and we never add you to a mailing list or share what you send with anyone.
The only cookies
The site sets no cookies of its own. The only ones in your browser come from Amazon Web Services, which runs the site, and none of them holds anything about you or is used to track you:
- Two load balancer cookies, set on every page, which send each of your visits to the same server. They expire after a week.
- One security cookie on the contact page. To keep automated spam out, opening that page may first run a brief automatic check that you are a person and not a bot, and the cookie shows that the check was passed.
Services that help run the site
Two well-known providers help deliver the site. They receive only what is needed to serve their part of the page, not your searches or your report, and their own privacy policies apply:
- Google, which serves the page fonts from
fonts.googleapis.comandfonts.gstatic.com - Amazon Web Services, which hosts the site and our map tiles, and so sees which part of the map is loaded when you open it, delivers the messages you send us, and runs the check on the contact page
Accuracy and limits of the data
The fire hazard zones and fire history come from CAL FIRE, and the power line fire risk map from the California Public Utilities Commission. Each is revised from time to time, and the data behind this site may be out of date, incomplete, or superseded by a revision we have not loaded yet. None of the boundaries follow property lines, so they are not survey-accurate, and an edge drawn near a parcel may not fall where this site draws it.
- Your local jurisdiction may enforce a more severe fire hazard class than the state map shows.
- The Commission drew its map to set utility fire-safety rules and makes no warranty for any other use.
- The fire history record is incomplete, most of all for older and smaller fires, and a place with no recorded fire can still burn.
We provide this site as it is, for general information, and make no warranty that any of it is accurate, complete or current. Do not rely on it for a decision that matters.
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of this site or from reliance on anything it shows you. If you do not accept that, please do not use the site.
These terms
These terms are governed by the law of the State of California. We may change this page as the site changes; the version posted here is the one that applies.
